Sonoma County Living Learning Landscapes was a collaborative project involving SRJC, The Habitat Corridor Project, UC Master Gardeners of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa Water, the Sonoma–Marin Saving Water Partnership, and the California Native Plant Society–Milo Baker Chapter. The project was supported by in-kind contributions of time, expertise, and materials from partner organizations, nurseries, irrigation suppliers, and the local waste hauler.
With funding from the Sonoma County Water Agency, the UC Master Gardeners and The Habitat Corridor Project designed and installed fire-wise demonstration gardens on SRJC campus lands that met Sonoma County MWELO standards. During the early years of the project, partner organizations played a central role in planning, installation, and stewardship of the landscapes. Ongoing maintenance and stewardship are now led by SRJC Facilities and the Campus Biodiversity Initiative (CBI), and in-particular our partners, the Biology Club and the Outdoor Club.

The project advanced the three pillars of sustainability by:
- replacing water-intensive non-native plant species with water-wise native landscapes (environment)
- creating adaptable garden designs and workforce development opportunities during installation (equity), and
- making landscape plans freely available online to reduce design costs and long-term maintenance needs (economics).
